Is Chiropractic Care Covered by Insurance in Ontario? Your Complete Guide

Yes — but the details matter. Here's exactly what's typically covered by extended health plans, MVA insurance, WSIB, and other options for patients in Oakville, Mississauga, and Burlington.

Insurance coverage for chiropractic care in Ontario can feel confusing, especially when you're just trying to figure out if a visit will be affordable. The good news: most working Ontarians have chiropractic coverage of some kind. Here's a plain-English breakdown of the main options.

Extended health insurance (the most common source)

If you have an employer group benefits plan, chances are strong that chiropractic care is covered. Typical parameters:

Coverage runs on a calendar year basis and doesn't roll over. If you have unused benefits and an ongoing concern, using them before December 31 makes sense.

What "coverage" actually means

There are two main models:

Direct billing: The clinic bills your insurer at the time of service, and you pay only the portion your insurance doesn't cover (or nothing at all if fully covered).

Reimbursement model: You pay the full amount at the clinic, receive a detailed receipt, and submit it to your insurer (usually online or via app) for reimbursement.

Most clinics in Oakville, Mississauga, and Burlington offer one or the other. At THE WAY Chiro we currently use the reimbursement model — we provide detailed receipts you can submit to your insurer.

OHIP coverage — the exception

OHIP does not cover chiropractic care for most Ontario residents. Coverage was removed in 2004. This is why most patients rely on extended health, MVA, WSIB, or private pay.

A small number of low-income seniors may qualify for partial OHIP-based coverage through specific programs. Your family doctor or a chiropractor can help you determine eligibility.

Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) coverage

If your injury is related to a car accident, Ontario auto insurance provides substantial coverage:

MVA care is billed directly to the auto insurer through OCF forms — no out-of-pocket cost to you. Whiplash, neck injuries, back injuries, and headaches from car accidents are among the most common MVA presentations we see.

WSIB (workplace injuries)

If your injury happened at work, WSIB covers chiropractic care from approved providers. Steps:

  1. Report the injury to your employer
  2. Open a WSIB claim
  3. Once approved, book with a WSIB-registered chiropractor
  4. Treatment is billed directly to WSIB

Frequently asked questions

How do I check if my plan covers chiropractic?

Three ways: (1) log into your insurance portal and search "chiropractic"; (2) check your benefits booklet; (3) call the number on the back of your card and ask directly.

Will my insurance cover shockwave, laser, or acupuncture?

Depends on the plan. Acupuncture is often covered under a separate line. Shockwave and laser may or may not be — some plans cover them as part of chiropractic, others require them to be billed separately. Ask your insurer.

Do I have to pay a deductible?

Most extended health plans have no deductible for chiropractic. Some do — check your specific plan.

Can I split coverage between multiple family members?

Yes. Most plans have per-person annual maximums, meaning each family member has their own limit.

What if I don't have insurance?

You can pay privately. Rates typically run $60-$110 per follow-up visit, and receipts are tax-deductible.

The bottom line

For most patients in Oakville, Mississauga, and Burlington, chiropractic care is either fully or substantially covered by insurance. Before your first visit, spend five minutes checking your benefits booklet or calling your insurer — it's the single best thing you can do to avoid surprises. And if you're not sure, we can help you understand what your plan likely covers before we start treatment.
