What Is Physiotherapy? And How It Compares to Chiropractic

Physiotherapy and chiropractic overlap in many areas — and each has strengths. Here's what physiotherapy does and how to decide which provider fits your needs.

Physiotherapy (physical therapy) is a healthcare profession focused on restoring movement and function through exercise, manual therapy, education, and physical modalities. It's a broad specialty with practitioners working across musculoskeletal, neurological, cardiovascular, and pediatric conditions.

What physiotherapists are trained to do

Canadian physiotherapists complete a Master's degree in physiotherapy after undergraduate study, plus provincial licensing. Training covers anatomy, physiology, pathology, exercise prescription, manual therapy, modality use, and clinical practice across many specialty areas.

Both treat musculoskeletal conditions, both use manual therapy, exercise, and education. Both work with athletes, weekend warriors, and everyday patients with pain.

Which should you see?

Chiropractor if — spinal pain, headaches, joint issues, or you've had good experience with manual therapy in the past. Also good for acute mechanical pain where manipulation is helpful.

Physiotherapist if — post-surgical rehab (knee replacement, shoulder surgery), neurological conditions, pelvic floor issues, vestibular problems, or you're focused on progressive exercise-based rehab.

For many common conditions — back pain, neck pain, sports injuries — either profession can help you well. Sometimes people benefit from seeing both concurrently, since the strengths are complementary.

How we work together

At THE WAY Chiro, we regularly co-treat with physiotherapists in the community and coordinate care when patients are seeing both. Good outcomes come from good teamwork, not turf battles.

If you're unsure which provider is right for your situation, come in for a consultation — we'll tell you honestly if what you need is outside our best scope.
