Chiropractic care is not covered by OHIP. It was delisted from the Ontario Health Insurance Plan on December 1, 2004, and remains uncovered in 2026.
There is no partial coverage, no seniors' exemption, and no low-income exemption. This catches a lot of people out, because chiropractic was partially covered before 2004 and many patients still assume it is.
Why isn't chiropractic covered?
OHIP generally funds services delivered by physicians, or delivered inside hospitals. Chiropractic care is provided by regulated non-physician practitioners in community clinics, which places it outside OHIP's scope — the same reason physiotherapy in private clinics, massage therapy, and most dental care aren't covered either.
It's worth being clear that this is a funding decision, not a comment on the treatment. Chiropractors in Ontario are regulated health professionals governed by the College of Chiropractors of Ontario, with protected title and mandatory registration.
What does cover chiropractic in Ontario
This is the part that matters, because most patients have more coverage than they realize:
| Source | What it typically covers |
|---|---|
| Extended health benefits (employer or private plan) | The most common route. Plans commonly include an annual chiropractic maximum, often several hundred dollars per year. Check whether your plan also covers acupuncture separately. |
| Auto insurance (after a collision) | Ontario's statutory accident benefits cover treatment after a motor vehicle collision, regardless of fault. This is separate from your extended health plan and doesn't use up your annual maximum. |
| WSIB | Covers approved treatment for injuries that happened at work. |
| Health Spending Account (HSA/PHSP) | Pays with pre-tax dollars. Keep your receipts. |
| CRA medical expense credit | Chiropractic is an eligible medical expense on your Canadian tax return, so out-of-pocket costs may still reduce your tax bill. |
How to check your coverage in five minutes
- Log in to your benefits portal, or call the number on your benefits card
- Ask specifically: "What is my annual maximum for chiropractic?" — and separately for acupuncture, since they're often separate pools
- Ask whether a physician's referral is required for reimbursement (some plans ask for one even though Ontario law doesn't)
- Ask whether the plan year runs on the calendar year or your company's benefit year — unused amounts usually don't carry over
- Ask whether your plan supports direct billing, or whether you pay and submit
Do you need a referral?
Not legally. Chiropractors are primary contact health professionals in Ontario, so you can book directly without seeing a physician first. Some insurance plans still request a referral for reimbursement purposes — that's an insurer rule, not a provincial one. We cover this in detail in our guide to referrals for chiropractic in Ontario.
What it actually costs
Because there's no OHIP coverage, price transparency matters. We publish a full breakdown of typical chiropractic pricing in how much chiropractic costs in Ontario, and a deeper look at plan types in our insurance coverage guide.
If cost is the reason you've been putting off getting assessed, tell us. It's better to have a straight conversation about what your plan covers and what a realistic treatment plan looks like than to guess — and we'd rather tell you honestly whether we think chiropractic is the right fit for your problem in the first place.
Frequently asked questions
Does OHIP cover chiropractic in Ontario?
No. Chiropractic was delisted from OHIP on December 1, 2004 and is not covered in 2026. There is no partial coverage and no exemption for seniors or low-income patients.
Did OHIP ever cover chiropractic?
Yes. Before December 2004, OHIP partially covered chiropractic visits with a per-visit subsidy. That coverage was removed during provincial budget changes and has not been reinstated.
Does OHIP cover chiropractic for seniors over 65?
No. There is no seniors' exemption. Patients over 65 are in the same position as everyone else and rely on extended health benefits or private payment.
Is chiropractic covered after a car accident in Ontario?
Yes, through your auto insurer's statutory accident benefits rather than OHIP. This coverage applies regardless of fault and is separate from your extended health plan.
Is chiropractic covered by WSIB?
WSIB covers approved chiropractic treatment for injuries that occurred at work. The claim must be filed and approved through WSIB.
Can I claim chiropractic on my taxes in Canada?
Yes. Chiropractic services are an eligible medical expense for the Canada Revenue Agency medical expense tax credit. Keep your detailed receipts.
Do I need a doctor's referral to see a chiropractor in Ontario?
Not by law — chiropractors are primary contact practitioners, so you can book directly. Some insurance plans request a referral for reimbursement, so check your specific policy.
